The A.E. Crandall Hook & Ladder Co. is an organization of men and women who have chosen to serve the Alfred community in an important and exciting way. We have been fortunate to have excellent financial support from the community. This allows us to have the equipment we need to provide quality fire and emergency medical services. But it takes more than equipment to give our community the protection and care it deserves– it takes the person that you can become as a member of the A.E. Crandall Hook & Ladder Company.

The following questions may help you decide if our company is of interest to you.

What kind of new members do you need?

We are looking for people over the age of 18 who are willing to participate and learn the skills involved in emergency services. To be a member you must live or work in the Alfred Community. We are especially in need of help during the day. Those who work in Alfred but live elsewhere can be a valuable asset to us.

How can I help?

We need firefighters, these are the people who drive the fire equipment, operate it at emergency scenes, use ladders and other equipment and operate hose lines. Another important job is interior firefighter, this is the person who is trained to use self-contained breathing apparatus to attack the fire from within the building. We also need emergency medical services personnel. They are drivers, Certified First Responders and EMT’s.

What does the company provide?

We provide the training which begins in-house and extends to courses taught by state instructors at various locations in the county or at the State Fire Academy at Montour Falls. All protective equipment is provided as well as a stipend for uniforms, if you choose. We provide the opportunity to serve the Alfred community in a meaningful and exciting way. The camaraderie of working in this environment also is a great benefit.

What are my obligations?

New members must pass both a state background check for arson and a physical. We have drills or meetings four Sunday evenings per month for about two hours. Most members attend two or three of those. After you have been in the company awhile you will be encouraged to take an EMT course or the Basic Firefighter course. You will be expected to respond to emergencies when you are available.

How can I find out more?

Stop at the Fire hall on any Sunday night at 7:00 pm and we’ll be happy to talk about the company and you’ll get a chance to see what it’s like to participate.  You may also send an email to aecrandall@infoblvd.net or complete an online application.
