Re:        Summary of Activity 2002

Greetings from the A.E. Crandall Hook & Ladder Company, I am happy to share with you a copy of this year's summary of activity for our Fire and Ambulance companies. We hope that you find this summary of value. Please feel free to contact any of our Chiefs or me if you have questions or need assistance. As you are aware we are an entirely volunteer company made up of your friends and neighbors. We are all very proud to serve the Alfred community since 1887.

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY 2002

This past year the members of A.E. Crandall Hook & Ladder Company volunteered 6,242.4 hours of service to the community. The company responded to 436 emergency calls.

Of these 391 were EMS (ambulance) and 45 were Fire emergencies. The Fire calls ranged from carbon monoxide investigations, motor vehicle accidents, and structure fires, false alarms, to a variety of service calls. The EMS calls consisted of 106 Advanced life support, 205 Basic life support and the remainder were transports and standbys.  The emergency calls consists of about one-third of the total hours volunteered.

The remaining two-thirds of the total hours was spent by the members in practices/training, meetings, Fire and EMS classes, maintenance of vehicles and the fire hall, and in providing fire prevention education to students and staff of Alfred University and Alfred State College, the Montessori school and Methodist daycare, and fire extinguisher training to the employees of Alfred University.

We have worked and continue to work with both schools, the village police, department of public woks, code enforcement, county and state to coordinate and improve our response to any emergency in the village or on either campus and to ensure safety of our personnel and residents of the village.

We would like to thank the community for it’s continued support.  With your financial support and some support from the state, we have been able to upgrade a part of our self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), replace some of our turn out gear, replace our fire hose with large diameter fire hose, and improve the lighting in our hall. These improvements have allowed our fire fighters and ambulance personnel to respond and perform safely and efficiently to any emergency situation.

We extend our thanks to our sister companies of Alfred Station, Almond, and Andover for their help at our emergencies and the other fire companies in Allegany County who have and stand ready to help.

We will continue to train and work at providing emergency services to the residents of our service area in a changing society.
